Overview

Years ago, we came together to form this community-based organization (CBO), in pursuit of one voice where we engage amongst ourselves and with others, public or private entities, on socio economic development for the benefit of Mfangano Island, Suba West Sub-County.

Our History

Mfangano Development Forum (MDF) CBO) was registered on 30/8/2021, by "Awivuagano" whose aim is to promote the interest and welfare of the people of Mfangano Island, Suba West Sub-County, by coming up with initiatives to develop ourselves by transforming, enhancing, conserving, preserving, and thus uplifting every facet of life of the residents of the Sub County (comprising the 6 beautiful and magical islands of Mfangano, Takawiri, Remba, Ringiti, Atego and Risi) through our rallying call of "Olugendo Lwifu" Olusuba for "our journey”. From this nascent position MDF setup as a (CBO), which thereafter birthed a sister, entity the MDF SACCO to help develop a culture of saving, and then subsequently plan on setting up another sister entity;- The MDF Investment Entity to engage and open our community investment in commercial activities. These then form our three-legged stool, upon which you and our future generations can then sit /stand upon to pursue individual aspirations that we toil daily to giving them a chance to achieve.

Our Structure

The MDF Community-Based Organization (CBO) operates through nine sub-committees focusing on key thematic areas such as education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and public administration. Additionally, two ad hoc committees—Lobby & Advocacy and Events & Organizing—support its initiatives. The MDF SACCO, registered on September 1, 2022, is a non-deposit taking financial cooperative with 78 growing members. The MDF Investment Entity, under MDF CBO, plans to establish Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for specific projects. 30% of shares in each SPV will be reserved for low-income investors, allowing small-scale traders and fishermen to participate at 1/- per share with set limits per individual or entity.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Absasuba are dispersed across countries, in Kenya alone we tag five (5) lands. We have sub clans, then clans yet we are ONE. and there is only One Mfangano Island. As such we embrace the diversity of clans, the equity in educating both genders, and inclusion that any one, from any of the lands, should be a part of everything we do at MDF. There are different paths for anyone to be involved: Be it through the core MDF -Community Based Organization: be it through the MDF SACCO; or be it through the Investments Vehicles we will be creating. We are committed to having you participate one way or another. At MDF, we celebrate that everyone has God given talent, that these can be channeled towards a common Good in the true meaning of the African Traditional Concept We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of all as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs…With that in mind, as we strive towards a common objective of improving Mfangano, let us reflect on the following:- Coming Together is a Beginning, Staying is Progress, Working Together is Success

Tom Joseph Mboya - a son of Suba

“We are clan- and tribal-minded in that we are communal in our concept of life. A person is not only an individual, he is part of a systems, part of a community. The person has a responsibility to the community and in turn, the community has responsibilities to him and his family. It is what one can call a Mutual Social Responsibility between the person and his community.”
