Building a Connected and Sustainable Mfangano Island
Ferry Services
Budget Allocation: Ksh 600 Million
- Ksh 300 Million from FY 2022/2023 Financial Budget (already banked by KPA).
- Additional Ksh 300 Million in FY 2023/2024 Budget.
- Ferry construction is ongoing at Kisumu Shipyard, with an estimated delivery in September 2025.
Sena Pier Upgrade and Rehabilitation
Cost: Ksh 1.2 Billion
- Approved for upgrade and rehabilitation.
- Public participation by KPA already completed.
- Work to commence soon as land is not an issue.
- Includes Piers at Kendu Bay, Homa Bay, and Mbita.
Access Roads
Budget Allocation: Ksh 10 Million (County FY 2024/2025)
- Funds allocated for Soklo, Ugina, and Sena-Kibanga Access Roads.
- Follow-up needed with the National Government to upgrade the Mfangano Ring Road from Murram to Bitumen Standard (Tarmac).
- Promise made by President William Ruto during the commissioning of the road on 7/8/2023.
Mfangano Ring Road
Cost: Ksh 299,871,526.50
- 53 KM of road to be upgraded to Bitumen Standard (Tarmac).
- Follow-up with the National Government to fulfill the promise made by President William Ruto during the commissioning of the road on 7/8/2023.
Sena Airstrip
- Need to consider building a new airstrip or rehabilitating and upgrading the existing one at Sena.
- County currently engaging with the National Government for the expansion and upgrading of the Kabunde Airstrip.
- Sena Airstrip to be addressed afterward.
Network & Internet Connectivity
- MDF to engage Safaricom on frequent network failures and the need for improved internet connectivity on Mfangano Island.
- Tourism attraction necessitates reliable network connectivity.
- Recent network challenges experienced from 28/12/2023 to 2/1/2024.
Road Last Mile Connectivity
Budget Allocation: Ksh 88,000,000.00
- This project is at 80% design stage and 70% complete.
- Ensures connectivity in all 11 Sub Counties.
